Why My Book Drawing the Dragon was the Story I was Meant to Write

People often ask where the idea for my book Drawing the Dragon came from, and the answer always makes me smile because it wasn't actually the first book I started writing.
Originally, I began writing Song of Steel in 2010 when I started my writing career. I thought I wanted to start with a traditional fantasy novel, but somewhere along the way, I realized the story wasn't coming together the way I had imagined. Something was missing.
That's when Drawing the Dragon was born.
As a former U.S. Army Paratrooper, I found myself naturally gravitating toward the structure, discipline, and camaraderie I had experienced in the military. Those experiences became the foundation for the Jordans you meet in the Saga. They're an elite group of pilots whose training, responsibility, and unwavering commitment to one another felt incredibly authentic for me to write. Blending my military background with dragons, advanced technology, and interstellar adventure was simply...fun.
I also couldn't resist adding fantasy into the mix. Instead of writing a traditional fantasy novel, I created a science fantasy universe where cyborganic dragons, space opera, strong female leads, and immersive world-building exist alongside military strategy, artificial intelligence, and soft, slow-burn romance. It became the perfect balance of everything I love to read.
The best part? The story that wasn't quite ready, found its place after all. Song of Steel eventually became Book Five in my completed nine-book series, The GwenSeven Saga, exactly where it belonged.
As an author, my biggest advice to anyone interested in becoming an writer is, trust the creative process. I'm so glad I did. My book Drawing the Dragon became the beginning of an epic sci-fi fantasy series that combines dragon books, space fantasy, unforgettable characters, and a fully realized galaxy I loved exploring for nine books. Sometimes the story you think you're supposed to write isn't the one waiting to be told, and that's where the real adventure begins.
Whether you're searching for a completed sci-fi fantasy series, epic space opera, dragon books for YA and adults, strong female lead fantasy, soft romance, or immersive world-building, I hope the first book in my series, The GwenSeven Saga, Drawing the Dragon becomes the start of your next unforgettable journey.
